Voters urged to check they're election ready before it's too late
With only four days to go until the voter registration deadline for local elections on 04 May, anyone wanting to vote must make sure they are election ready.
The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Monday (17 April). Voters can apply online – it takes just five minutes.
Voters have a range of options – they can vote in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday 18 April. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is a week later, 5pm on 25 April.
This year will see all 63 seats up for election in Trafford Council’s 21 wards. That means voters can vote for three candidates this year.
Sara Todd, returning officer for Trafford Council, said: “What we do as a Council has an effect on so many people’s lives, so it is important that people vote.
“Please take a few minutes of your time to check that you are eligible to vote, know the different ways you can vote and choose the right one for you.”
The all-out election, which takes place on Thursday 4 May, is because of changes to ward boundaries. The Boundary Commission made the changes following consultations in order to make the size of wards more equal in terms of population.
A result of the changes is that polling station venues may have changed. The address of the polling station is on the poll cards that have been posted out. Residents can also find their polling station by visiting wheredoivote.co.uk.
New legislation brought in by the Government now requires every voter to show photo identification at a polling station. If voters do not have an acceptable form of ID, they can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC). More details about these changes, including how to apply for a VAC, are available at trafford.gov.uk/elections.
Voting by post is not affected by this change.
