Trafford Rowing Club to host ‘Head of the Bridgewater’ canal race 2025

Trafford Rowing Club is hosting their annual ‘Head of the Bridgewater’ race on the Bridgewater Canal this Saturday (22 February).

Trafford Rowing Club

The event takes place from 9.30am-3pm and will see a number of clubs from across the UK race the course from Altrincham to Walton Park in Sale.

The event will feature 500 competitors racing in over 200 boats, all striving to complete the 3.1km course as quickly as possible. Some rowers will aim to beat the current record, while less experienced participants will take on a shorter course starting at Timperley Bridge.

Graham Whistance, chairman of Trafford Rowing Club, told us; “The racing starts at 9.30am, 12pm and 2pm, although there will be activity all through the day including cakes at Walton Park Scout hut and burgers and drinks available in Walton Park.”

Most rowing events are on wide rivers, but the Bridgewater Canal – with the towpath running alongside the course – will give locals and visitors the chance to be right alongside the action. You can watch the crews anywhere along the course, with the finishing line being close to Walton Park.

This is usually a great day out for the family!
