Waterside celebrates International Women’s Day
Waterside in Sale and Creative Industries Trafford have announced a series of events and exhibitions for this year’s International Women’s Day.
Deeds, Not Words
The exciting lineup includes two photographic exhibitions, an evening of theatre in development, a musical performance showcasing pioneering women, as well as talks and workshops - all led, created or inspired by female-identifying artists.
Heading up the International Women’s Day lineup are two photography exhibitions by female artists. Denise Laura Baker’s striking photography display Deeds, Not Words focuses on portraits of women in activism across a multitude of ongoing movements and protests. As a photographer, Denise continually collects and tells stories through her photography to give voice to those with whom she collaborates.
Roxana Allison’s Hope. Despair. Miracles. features portraits, landscapes and written word and showcases Longsight, in southeast Manchester: a working-class neighbourhood rich in ethnic diversity, yet long-associated – sometimes unfairly – with its complex social issues. Roxana’s singular, insightful visual narrative shows Longsight in a new light. Two of the featured portraits in the exhibition are recent winners of the 2023 British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain Award.
Roxana Allison will be discussing her work and processes at an event, In Conversation at Waterside on Saturday 02 March, as part of the International Women’s Day events. Her photographic work is strongly influenced by her mixed cultural upbringing and focuses on themes of place, belonging and community through portraiture and documentary photography.

Singer, songwriter and storyteller Louise Jordan for an evening of songs and stories in HerStories, as part of Waterside’s International Women’s Day celebrations. The thread that underpins all of Louise’s work is her desire to challenge existing narratives around gender and power, with many of her shows centring on remarkable women. HerStories will showcase some of history’s often overlooked pioneering women alongside anecdotes from Louise’s varied life on the road as a solo performer.
Female theatre-maker and arts facilitator Nour Sabouneh has created a series of workshops for people of all abilities and backgrounds - Creative Skills for Communication. These events will take place on Friday mornings throughout March, with one of the sessions on International Women’s Day, and will use simple creative techniques to develop communication skills via friendly and fun shared group activities.

The events for International Women’s Day take begin from Friday 01 March. Both exhibitions are free entry. Events are free or are charged at a subsidised rate.
