Canteena, a new bar and grill, arriving in Stanley Square

Canteena, a new bar and grill restaurant, is opening in Stanley Square later this month, located in the unit that was Sale Foodhall. 

Canteena is set to be opened by Danni Condron and Lisa Kettle, names that some Sale locals might recognise, as they are the twosome who renovated and opened The Bridge, which sadly closed earlier this year. 

We caught up with Danni ahead of the opening of Canteena and asked her to share their vision for the new restaurant and bar. 

“With everything going on in Stanley Square, we know it’s got a bit of everything, food-wise – you have vegetarian food at Green’s, pasta from SUD, small plates at Petisco. So we thought the missing link was more of a speciality steak place with a bar,” Danni said. 

“From conversations we’ve had with friends, it can be difficult to just drop by the town centre and get a drink, as places are busy, so we will have a large bar, for those just looking for a drink. If people are looking for a more formal dining experience, they can book a place in the restaurant. While steaks are a big part of the menu, we’ll also be including some old favourites that have been popular in our previous venues. These include cheese and onion pie, seafood linguine and good old-fashioned fish and chips!” 

From what was previously quite a clinical, tiled open space when Foodhall was in residence, Canteena’s decor aims to be cosier and warmer, with plenty of soft furnishings, banquette seating and quality wooden slats that will work to split the space. 

Danni said, “We are also going to have tables outside and an app that will allow people to order directly from their seats.”

So why Stanley Square? 

“When Stanley Square approached us about opening a new place, it was an exciting proposition for us. Stanley Square is one of the hot spots in Sale right now and it’s got a great buzz about it. It’s especially busy at the weekends, which is something we hope to contribute to in the future.”

According to a press release we received, Canteena Bar and Grill will specialise in top-quality Irish Dexter and Brazilian steak, whilst offering a great range of vegetarian and vegan options. The venue will be split into two halves, with the bar serving an extensive drinks menu and light bites, while the restaurant area will serve a wide variety of dishes.

The restaurant area has the capacity to host large parties of up to 30 people, ideal for family and friends to enjoy a meal together. There will also be special ticketed events, with the first being a three-course steak with paired wine on Thursdays.
